Wood wrist rest re-coating

My brother and I have UHKs with wood wrist rests. We have both had problems with the original coating getting chipped and flaking/wearing off. We are thinking about sanding our wrist rests and re-coating them. Has anyone done this? What is the factory coating? Any recommendations about a more durable product to use as a replacement? Thanks.

I’m unsure whether you’ve seen this guide, but it’s the best advice we can offer.

Please feel free to share your experience.

@ajh3 I’ve had this happen to all the wooden wrist wrests that I have. I just ended up sanding them down and coating them with tung oil for a warm & organic finish. I prefer them that way actually, over the laquer  .

The black rubber wrist rests don’t have this issue and are great feeling too!

@mlac Thanks for sharing the guide for wood wrist rest maintenance :+1: .

If you want to get really lasting coating, it is possible to coat it with Polyurethane. It will no longer get damaged by acids in sweat then.

But the process is very complicated. After sanding off all the old lacquer, one has to apply four to six layers of Polyurethane and let each layer completely dry before applying the next one.

It may well take a couple of days for the whole process but the good news is that after all this no typical “laquer-damageable” chemical (including all kinds of sweat) will damage the surface even slightly. If matte polyurethane is used, then it stays matte for a very long time without getting glossy.
