Wrist rest: rubber vs wood

I am quite happy with my wooden wrist rest. Yet, with the new UHK-80 at the horizon, I would like to hear about the firmness of the rubber version.

On a scale from 1-mushy to 9-hard, where would you rate the firmness of the rubber pad?

I would say 8. I own both wooden and rubber and prefer the rubber ones. They are very firm yet I find them to have better natural grip as compared to the wooden ones, which becomes noticeable when using them with the Riser 60, especially on higher angles.

I have a similar assessment as @nathan.

I now prefer the rubber palm rests since they’re not polished, more grippy, and are well insulated.

On the UHK60, I have both the wooden & rubber palm rests.

  • I’ve stopped using the wooden wrist rest on my UHK60, and just use the rubber one now.
  • The rubber palm rests are quite comfortable as they have a very little bit of give. But they’re no where near soft or mushy.
  • And on cold days, the wooden palm rests are a bit cold to the touch at first, but the rubber ones are neutral. So they feel quite cosy & grippy always.
  • I’ve had to strip the lacquer (with sandpaper) on the wooden palm rests, since my skin and the lacquer seem to be incompatible.

You can’t go wrong with the rubber wrist rests on the 60, and they’re stock on the 80.

(I like the general wood look and feel. Also the rubber attracts dust that is then clearly visible.)

The grip with higher angles is definitely a plus with the rubber pads.

I like the wood better as well. The rubber gets that white smudgy oil residue that takes some work to wipe down.

The palm rests on the UHK80 have hard plastic protective inserts covering the batteries, and then the rubber pads snap on over top of those. If you get the UHK80 without batteries, I think you could probably replace the inserts with some dense foam or whatever to customize the squish.

Exactly the information I was looking for. And a lot more. Makes sense that the grip on rubber is better when using the riser.

I am surprised to hear that the rubber version is not less durable, but actually, more so than wood. Big sigh of relief.
So here I stand corrected, and I am glad I asked.

Thanks a ton, everybody!

Just coming in at the last minute to also add my experience. I own the UHK60 with the wood palm rest and have been a tester for the UHK80 with the rubber palm rest.

The wood finish was getting worn off on my wood rest, something I knew I was eventually going to have to deal with. Also cleaning it was a bit more tedious as I had to be more gentle with both the choice of cleaner and level of abrasion.

The UHK80 rubber is perfectly comfortable and far easier to clean. The only reason I had the wood rests on the UHK60 was because I made my purchase before the release of the rubber ones.
