UHK80 palm rest - Ideas for wasted space

EDITED:
For clarity. Because I think I thoroughly confused Laszlo…

I was looking at all the empty space inside the UHK80’s palm rests, and thought how nice it would be to have some storage, or even an OS drive that could be accessed through the left half USB. So I guess I’d like to add a built-in USB hub to the future UHK wishlist.

But for now, when the yellow UHK80 case I pre-ordered gets here, I’ll experiment with the old case. If there’s enough room, I’ll try to run a connector cable inside the UHK80 case (under the PCB) with one end coming out of the top, and the other end connected to a USB drive inside the palm rest. Then I’d have a second USB port dedicated to storage that could be accessed by simply swapping the cable. That would be extremely convenient for me. Trying to get behind a PC to find a free port is a PITA when you’re in a wheelchair. I know the USB drive will probably take a performance hit when it’s connected over a cable, but as long as I get faster than USB 2.0 speeds, I’ll be happy. As long as it doesn’t get too hot, I think it could work.

The connector cable I have looks like it might fit along the left side. The case screw between the “Tab” and “Mouse” keys might be in the way though. If anyone has suggestions for how to reinforce a makeshift USB port, I’d love to hear some ideas.

Actually, I’d love some ideas on what to do with the extra space in the palm rests in general…

Can a portable version of Agent be made to run from a flash drive? That would be nice to have stored directly in the keyboard…

I’m afraid it’s not practically feasible to cut the tracks of the USB-C connector and add a USB hub in the middle to ultimately add a flash drive.

Wow :exploding_head: You must have thought I’d gone completely bonkers!
Of course I’m not crazy enough to cut/splice in a flash drive like that… I hope I’m not always that confusing.

I edited my original post. Hope it makes more sense now…

Put in a USB hub and allow connecting various devices (flash drives, mice, phone, …) to ports on the UHK. The challenge is to install the USB ports cleanly / good looking and accessible from the outside…

I don’t think the plastic part of the case around the palm rests is deep enough. If someone finds something that looks like it could squeeze in there, let me know.

Should be deep enough I think. Can measure it later…

Of course, a raspberry pi :person_shrugging:.

You’d have to use only the circuit board of a small hub without any casing. From what I can see, I think there’s enough space next to the battery in the left half. The sides of the plastic should be tall enough to fit cutouts for USB-C ports.

Pimp my UHK!

I’ve never actually messed with a raspberry pi, but I’m sure I could find one that might fit. Tons of possibilities there, for sure.

What the heck are you talking about? You should not hack the UHK in to pieces.

Yeah, USB-C ports should fit. I don’t think USB-A would though. Maybe if I trimmed out some of the underside of the case and put the ports in upside down.

Who still needs USB-A? :smiling_imp:

Secret side quest: actually, I sometimes still do  (to avoid the use of tons of adapters)

Too bad there isn’t a HUB module :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Me. When you see an offer of a 20 (or so) port usb-c hub at a reasonable price, let me know .

The smallest USB hub I know of. Unfortunately out of stock. https://www.tindie.com/products/mux/nanohub-tiny-usb-hub-for-hacking-projects/

Nice. Something like this, but I would go for more ports.

Well, the same seller offers 4 port and 7 port varianta too  https://www.tindie.com/products/mux/4-port-nanohub-tiny-usb-hub-for-hacking-projects/

Those look pretty convenient, but I’d probably go for the USB3 version. I think a couple ports would be enough for me, but USB2 speeds would be terrible.

Unfortunately, it looks like all his products have been out of stock for over five years :disappointed:
I doubt I could ever solder something that tiny anyway
