Low profile UHK80

Now that the UHK80 has been announced I can show off the switches and caps I’m using on it, I’m very happy with the feel and the general aesthetic.

(This screenshot was taken before I had received the missing cap)

This puts the keycaps on the same depth as the OLED and bottom Choc switches which makes it all look nice and uniform.

For the switches I’m using the Tecsee Low Profile Tactile switches:

And the keycaps are a custom set I ordered from Etsy:

The full set of keycaps was about $185 shipped, and you’ll need to contact the seller to give them the totals for each size you need. They did forget to send me one cap so they had to make an extra shipment. My only complaint is they’re 3D printed ABS and so they’re starting to show wear from use, but they do have really good shine-through even with my LED’s only being set to 25%

Alternatively, here’s the board with the set of DOYS caps that I brought over from my UHK60 (hence why there aren’t enough) before I got the new caps

Reset switch toothpick for scale, which I used regularly while testing the early firmware lol

Very slick!

How about the usability of the thumb keys? I’m afraid their usability may suffer because now that they’re the same height, one can accidentally hit a bottom thumb key when hitting a top thumb key.

Also, isn’t the palm rest too high now compared to the keycaps?

I wish Tecsee would make those in a heavy variant. And make em not so ugly

Those caps are nice! I think I like the rough textured gray ones better though.

My toothpick has been officially retired. It did have one last job of spreading some flexible adhesive before I put it out to pasture though :ghost:

I dropped a little piece of plastic in the reset switch hole, & glued a rubber UHK60v2 foot over it.

It may not be obvious in the pictures, but the palm rest is still a milimeter or two below the keycaps. I haven’t had any issues with accidental presses on the bottom keys, maybe it’s because of how I hold my hands on the wrests.

Bold of you to assume you’re never going to need that again

It’s not glued shut or blocked; it’s now a button that I push by simply curling my fingers over the top to the board. I don’t have to turn the keyboard over & stuff a toothpick in there anymore
