After 2 years with a UHKv2, I ordered the 80 the moment I saw the newsletter. After a week, or so, of use I mostly love it but there are a few things driving me crazy.
First, the LEDs. I know it’s been widely reported here, but the noise is driving me crazy. Never had any issues with my 60, but with my 80, I had to drop the brightness below 50% before the high pitched squeal stopped.
Second, I am having a lot of issues with keys “sticking”. The keys themselves are fine, but at random the keyboard will act as though specific keys are being held down. Each time I need to hit ESC and the offending key a bunch of times for the keeb to realize I’m not holding a key down.
Third, the wrist rest is driving me crazy. I know there’s a bit of an adjustment for any new keyboard, but I expected it to be minimal. Instead my wrists and hands are killing me. The best guess I have so far is that it’s a combo of 3 things. First the wrist rest material (I used wood for the last 2 years). Second, the rest is .25" higher relative to the keys vs the v2. Third there is a bit more flex in the 80 vs the v2. I suspect that not having a battery in mine and the softer rest is the big drivers for me. Any chance for STL files and/or a wood rest option (ideally a weighted insert for people not using batteries)?
Complaints aside, keep up the amazing work! My 60v2 is the only keeb that’s lasted more than a few months without significant wear. On top of that you delivered on my biggest request (75+). I can’t recommend the UHKs enough!
@verchalent Please try the newly released 12.2.0 firmware, which should reduce the audible noise, and let me know your findings.
To my knowledge, the virtually stuck keys issue should be resolved in the latest firmware. Please give it a try and let us know.
The height difference between the UHK 60 and UHK 80 palm rest compared to the keycaps should be close to zero. I can’t reproduce the flex, and it hasn’t been reported yet, but feel free to create a video, and we’ll look into it. The batteries don’t make the UHK 80 more rigid. I’m sorry, but we don’t release the STL files of the UHK 80 yet, and we don’t plan a wooden palm rest option. Do you use tenting? Possibly with Riser? What angles for the left and right halves?
@Tunney The noise level of the UHK 80 is similar to the UHK 60 with the latest firmware. Lumissil LED drivers are getting better at combating audible noise, but they’re still not perfect.
@Mundgjer I wouldn’t jump to quick conclusions yet. Very few customers complained about the noise and nobody returned the UHK because of it. Wrist pain is extremely rare with the UHK, it can be affected by numerous factors, many of which can be adjusted.
@mlac thanks for the fast response as always! Just flashed 12.2.0. The sound isn’t gone, but it is definitely better. Something is off with it though. I am now seeing a lot of issues with keys getting doubled and or not working. Below is an example of what it now looks like if don’t correct the output.
This is a test to show all the ddouble letters and spaces. For some reason space S and other keys are ggggggggggggetting sent multiple times for each press. There also seem to be issues where keys arep resseddddd buy not sentttt. or they do not register at all. That sems really common with my left shift key.
Something definitely is not right with the 12.2.0 for me. I am going to rollback to 12.1 for now as this is unusable at the moment.
I dropped to 12.1 and was still seeing the issue, so I power cycled the keyboard. After that the issue went away and I was able to flash back to 12.2. So far everything seems to be working fine with 12.2 now. Happy to put in an issue if it’s still helpful, but for now it looks like a bad flash and not actually a FW issue. Sorry for the false alarm there.
Now that I re-flashed, I’m not noticing a tremendous difference in the sound. I need to drop the key brightness to 90ish before I stop hearing it at normal distance. That’s about where I’ve had it for the last week and to be honest, I think it’s plenty bright enough. Guess I just got lucky that I never had the issue with my 60.
As for the flex/differences, I am mostly grasping at straws to explain what I’m feeling. If anything it’s an illustration of my 60 being typing bliss for the last two years. Right now I’m using the 80 tented, the same as I was with my 60. I did get the riser kit this time, but I haven’t used it yet.
@Mundgjer and @Tunney, just wanted to put things into context. The noise is infinitely manageable (I just got lucky with my 60 I guess) and I have wrist issues that make me super picky. My 60v2 was the first keyboard that I truly loved and had no pain with for years. On the very rare occasions I had any issues, @mlac responded instantly and helped. It may turn out that the 60 is slightly better for me, but I 100% wholly recommend them both based on my experience so far.
I’ve never really had trouble with noise from either the UHK60 or UHK80. I have to literally turn all the LEDs to full power, and put my ear right up on the keys, to hear it at all.
Strangely enough, I had to flash 12.2.0 twice to my UHK80, because after the first flash the left half would not work. After the second flash everything was fine.
@mlac Can’t really make this easily reproducible, nor do I have logs from the incident. So I don’t think an issue called “left half firmware update sometimes fails” is helpful, is it?
First thing I did was swap out the browns for holy pandas. Another good switch for uhk is boba u4’s ( the silent ones ), gives it a very pleasant feel if you like silents.
